Jones Trophy


REMARKABLY THERE ARE TWO HOLDERS OF THE VICTORIA CROSS BURIED IN FINCHAMPSTEAD CHURCHYARD

GENERAL SIR JOHN WATSON (1829 -1919) WAS COMMISSIONED INTO THE BOMBAY ARMY AND WAS AWARDED THE VICTORIA CROSS FOR GALLANTRY IN THE 1857 INDIAN MUTINY. IN 1870 HE BECAME AIDE- DE -CAMPE TO QUEEN VICTORIA HOLDING THE POST FOR ELEVEN YEARS

COLONEL ALFRED STOWELL JONES (1832 – 1920) ALSO WON THE VICTORIA CROSS IN THE INDIAN MUTINY THIS AT THE SIEGE OF LUCKNOW

AFTER DISTINGUISHED SERVICE COL JONES RETIRED TO FINCHAMPSTEAD TO BECOME A MUCH RESPECTED MEMBER OF THE COMMUNITY. COL AND MRS JONES CELEBRATED THEIR GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY IN 1913. TO MARK THE OCCASION THE PEOPLE OF FINCHAMPSTEAD PRESENTED THEM WITH THE LIDDED SILVER GILT BOWL. COL JONES LIVED A FURTHER SEVEN YEARS DYING IN 1920

IN 1984 THE COUPLE’S GRANDDAUGHTER RUTH DE COURCEY-IRELAND IN HER EIGHTIETH YEAR GAVE THE BOWL TO THE FINCHAMPSTEAD SOCIETY AS A TROPHY TO BE AWARDED ANNUALLY. IT HAS BEEN PRESENTED TO THE PERSON OR PERSONS WHO HAVE GIVEN OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO OUR PARISH AS NOMINATED BY POPULAR VOTE
